Student Life

African Mosaic

African Mosaic is the brainchild of two remarkable women – our founder, Salome Francois, and the founder of Faith Montessori school, Emma Amoo-Gottfried, both of blessed memory. The idea was to bring students of both schools together for a week in February to collaborate on crafting projects.

The culmination of the week is a celebration of drumming, dancing, and arts exhibits for parents and invited guests. This is a transformative experience for our students to bond with the mainstream students in Faith Montessori.

The African Mosaic is part of the legacy of these two visionary women, who sought to create a more inclusive society in Ghana.

Fun Day Games

The Annual Fun Day Games take place in July. These games are part of our mission to provide special education for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism. They celebrate the skills and sportsmanship of our students and highlight the importance of fitness and physical activity for everyone.

We invite other special schools to participate in the activities and engage in healthy competition. At our games, all participants are winners and they all get a medal.

Siblings Workshop

The Annual Siblings Workshop in July invites siblings and cousins of our students to come to school with them at 8am, and to sit next to them as they go through their normal day.

Siblings experience their special brother or sister operating in different spaces – classroom, physio room, speech therapy, ict room etc -, and often learn new things about them. From 12.30 – 2.30 the siblings gather in their own workshop space to eat lunch, listen to a presentation, and participate in a Q&A session.

Christmas Pageant

Our Annual Christmas Pageant in the middle of December is a special event held in our amphitheater space in the early evening.

From 6 – 8pm our students celebrate the Christmas season by presenting their audience with a Nativity play, carol singing, recitations, choreographed dances, to go along with food, drink, and good cheer. Parents, siblings, invited guests and friends patronize this occasion.

PEP

Once a term on a Saturday morning we hold a Parent Educational Program (PEP) for our parents and teachers to educate themselves. The format is in the form of a presentation by a person knowledgeable about a topic, followed by a Q&A session.

Recent PEPs have focussed on interventions for individuals with special needs in the areas of speech therapy, oral hygiene, and physiotherapy.

Arts Exhibition

The Annual Art Exhibition in November is an event designed to showcase and sell the Arts & Crafts items that our Vocational students have made across the year. Running from 10am – 3pm, this is a fun-filled occasion with street vendors, A DJ, an MC, and presentations by the New Horizon Cultural Troupe.

Items for sale include African Baskets, African Dolls, Patchwork Quilts, Kente Sashes & Placemats, Batik Fabrics & Tablecloths, Doormats, and Footstools & Serving Trays. This event is open to the general public.

IEP Meetings

During the month of July and prior to the Long Vacation, parents and guardians meet with teachers to review their wards’ progress through the year. These meetings are scheduled in July, and will focus on the whole child – academic, physical, emotional, mental. There is data intake, as well as discussions about any life changes, new therapies, changes in medication or weight.

Together, the parent and teacher assess educational plans of study for their effectiveness, and make recommendations moving forward.

Health Day

For one day each term we invite reputable members of the medical community in Accra to volunteer their nurses and doctors to serve to our students by way of assessments for dental needs, blood tests, ear, nose, throat, etc.

Parents are invited to attend this event so as to speak to medical practitioners if further referrals are needed.
